A Day in the Life

A typical day as a Fairfield Substitute Teacher begins with arriving at the assigned school before the first bell, checking in with the front office, and reviewing the lesson plans and classroom notes left by the regular teacher. You'll greet students as they enter the classroom, take attendance according to school procedures, and dive into the day's instructional content — whether that means leading a reading lesson, facilitating a math activity, or supervising independent work time. Throughout the day, you'll implement teacher lesson plans, assign classwork and homework, and maintain classroom control and discipline to ensure a productive learning environment. You'll set up any necessary technology to support instruction and handle transitions between subjects or class periods with confidence and calm. At the end of the day, you'll complete a daily report for the regular classroom teacher summarizing student behavior, work completed, and any notable events. Success in this role looks like students who stayed on task, felt supported, and left the classroom having learned something new.

Responsibilities

• Implement teacher-prepared lesson plans and deliver instruction in alignment with classroom learning objectives
• Assign and explain classwork and homework to students, ensuring clarity and understanding
• Maintain classroom control and discipline, fostering a respectful and focused learning environment
• Complete and submit a detailed daily report to the classroom teacher at the end of each assignment
• Take attendance accurately and in accordance with school procedures and policies
• Set up and operate basic technology equipment to support classroom instruction and learning activities
• Follow all school rules, procedures, and staff expectations throughout the school day
• Communicate professionally with school administrators, office staff, and fellow educators as needed during assignments

Requirements

Required

• ! Completion of ALSDE Background Check, as required by the Alabama State Department of Education
• ! Completion of Erin's Law Online Training, as mandated for school personnel in Alabama
• ! Completion of Jason Flatt Act Training, required for all school employees in Alabama
• ! Possession of either an ALSDE Teaching Certificate or an Alabama Substitute Teacher License (one of which is required to work in Alabama public schools)
• ! Ability to work on an on-call basis with flexibility to accept assignments as they become available
• ! Friendly, approachable attitude with the ability to connect with students of varying ages and backgrounds
• ! Prior related experience working with children in an educational, childcare, or youth-focused setting
• ! Punctual and professional conduct, including maintaining a professional appearance at all times
• ! Physical ability to lift heavy objects up to 40 lbs as needed in a school environment

Preferred

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Education, Child Development, or a related field
• Experience working within a K–12 public school setting as a teacher, paraprofessional, or instructional aide
• Familiarity with classroom management strategies and differentiated instruction techniques
