A Day in the Life

A typical day as a Griffin School Mental Health Counselor Intern begins with reviewing student schedules and checking in with your supervising counselor to prioritize the day's caseload. You may spend the morning co-facilitating a small group focused on coping skills or social-emotional learning, followed by conducting a behavioral observation in a classroom setting. Afternoons might involve collaborating with a teacher or administrator to discuss a student's behavior intervention plan, assisting with a family communication, or participating in a team meeting. Throughout the day, you will document your interactions in student records with care and precision, ensuring compliance with school policies and legal guidelines. You will also have dedicated supervision sessions where you can reflect on your practice, ask questions, and receive guidance from experienced school mental health professionals. No two days are exactly alike — you may be called upon to assist with a crisis response, support a school-wide Positive Behavior Support activity, or attend a professional learning session, all of which contribute to your growth as a future mental health practitioner.

Responsibilities

• Assist in providing individual and small group counseling focused on social-emotional learning, coping skills, and behavior support
• Support the implementation of school-wide initiatives such as Positive Behavior Support (PBIS) and SEL programming
• Help conduct student assessments, behavioral observations, and basic mental health screenings
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address individual student needs
• Participate in developing and implementing behavior intervention and support plans for students
• Assist with crisis response and de-escalation procedures under direct supervision
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with school policies and applicable legal guidelines
• Support family engagement efforts by assisting with communication, resource sharing, and referrals to community services
• Participate in team meetings, professional learning opportunities, and scheduled supervision sessions

Requirements

Required

• ! Current enrollment in a graduate program in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field
• ! Demonstrated interest in working with children and adolescents in a school-based setting
• ! Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• ! Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and uphold professional standards at all times
• ! Completion of a Georgia Gemalto Background Check (required prior to placement)
• ! Review and acknowledgment of the Griffin-Spalding Employee Handbook

Preferred

• Prior experience working with youth in educational, camp, childcare, or community settings
• Familiarity with trauma-informed care, culturally responsive practices, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
• Basic knowledge of school counseling frameworks such as the ASCA National Model
• Experience with data collection, progress monitoring, or case documentation in an academic or professional context
