A Day in the Life

A typical day as a substitute Child Nutrition Worker at Bullock County Schools begins early, arriving at the school cafeteria ahead of meal service to review the day's menu and receive direction from the cafeteria manager or designated supervisor. You'll help prepare and arrange food and beverages for safe and efficient service, ensuring everything is portioned and presented according to program standards. During meal periods, you'll serve students and staff with a friendly and welcoming attitude, keeping lines moving and the dining area running smoothly. Between service periods, you'll clean and sanitize utensils, equipment, and food preparation and serving areas — including sweeping, mopping, washing tables, and managing waste removal. You may also assist with inspecting incoming food deliveries, conducting inventory counts, and restocking supplies to ensure the kitchen is ready for the next service. Throughout the day, you are expected to maintain strict confidentiality concerning student records and uphold the professional standards of the school and program. Success in this role looks like a well-run meal service, a clean and safe kitchen, and students who feel welcomed and cared for every time they walk through the cafeteria line.

Responsibilities

• Arrange food and beverages to serve students and staff safely and efficiently during scheduled meal periods.
• Ensure food and beverages are portioned and presented according to program standards.
• Clean and sanitize utensils, equipment, and food storage, preparation, and serving areas, including sweeping, mopping, garbage removal, and washing tables.
• Inspect food items and supplies to verify quantity and specifications of orders and to comply with mandated health standards.
• Interact positively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to establish a friendly and welcoming dining environment.
• Serve students and staff, keeping meal lines moving and the dining area running smoothly.
• Conduct inventory of food, condiments, and supplies to ensure availability of items and maintain adequate stock levels.
• Restock supplies to ensure the kitchen is ready for the next service.
• Maintain food service equipment in proper working condition and report any issues to the supervising cafeteria manager.
• Maintain strict confidentiality concerning student records and sensitive school information at all times.
• Follow all food safety and sanitation protocols, including proper food handling, temperature monitoring, and personal hygiene standards in accordance with Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines.
• Review the day's menu and receive direction from the cafeteria manager or designated supervisor.

Requirements

Required

• ! State of Alabama Background Check (ALSDE Background Check) — required prior to beginning work; candidate is responsible for the $48.00 fee.
• ! Jason Flatt Act Training — required online training module focused on youth suicide awareness and prevention.
• ! Erin's Law Online Training — required online training module focused on personal body safety and child sexual abuse prevention.
• ! Ability to lift or move heavy objects up to 65 pounds as needed throughout the workday.
• ! Ability to work on an on-call, substitute basis with schedule flexibility based on school program needs.
• ! Punctual, professional demeanor with the ability to adhere to school rules, guidelines, and conduct standards.

Preferred

• Prior experience in food service, cafeteria operations, or a commercial kitchen setting.
• Previous experience working with children or in a K–12 school environment.
• Familiarity with food safety standards, ServSafe certification, or equivalent food handler training.
• Basic knowledge of inventory management or experience with food service equipment maintenance.
