As a substitute worker, you will step in as needed to support school cafeteria operations across the district, helping to maintain the high standards of the National School Lunch, Breakfast, and After School programs. This is a temporary, on-call position, and hours are not guaranteed — availability will be based on the district's needs and demands. A Day in the Life

A typical day as a Substitute Child Nutrition Program Worker begins with arriving at your assigned school site and quickly orienting yourself to the day's meal service needs. You'll work alongside the regular nutrition staff to prepare and portion food items in accordance with nutritional guidelines, ensuring meals are ready before the first students arrive. During service, you'll interact warmly with students and staff as you distribute meals, operate the serving line, and — when assigned — manage the cashier station by collecting payments and balancing the register. Between service periods, you'll focus on maintaining a clean and sanitary environment: washing equipment, mopping floors, wiping down tables, and restocking supplies. You may also inspect incoming food deliveries to verify quantities and compliance with health standards, and conduct inventory checks to ensure all necessary items are available. The pace is fast, the work is physical, and the reward is knowing that every student who walks through that cafeteria line is being cared for. Responsibilities

• Prepare, serve, and distribute food and beverages in compliance with the nutritional and dietary requirements of the National School Lunch, Breakfast, and After School programs.
• Maintain food preparation, service, and storage areas in an organized and sanitary condition by cleaning and sanitizing all foodservice equipment, tools, dishes, trays, and working surfaces.
• Operate various foodservice equipment safely and skillfully, and promptly report any malfunctions or incidents to the assigned supervisor.
• Serve as cashier when assigned, including collecting payments, balancing cash registers, and preparing deposits.
• Conduct inventory of food, condiments, and supplies to ensure item availability, and inspect incoming food items and supplies to verify quantities and compliance with mandated health standards.
• Interact positively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to foster a friendly and welcoming dining environment while maintaining strict confidentiality regarding student records.
• Perform daily cleaning and stocking duties, including sweeping, mopping, garbage removal, washing tables, and maintaining the dining area furnishings and storage spaces.
• Participate in approved professional development activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, including preparing and serving meals at approved school functions and special events.
• Arrive at the assigned school site and quickly orient to the day's meal service needs.

Requirements

Required

• ! Completion of the Griffin Spalding Employee Handbook acknowledgment.
• ! Successful completion of a Georgia Gemalto Background Check.
• ! Ability to lift heavy objects up to 65 lbs.
• ! Ability to work on an on-call, as-needed basis with a flexible and adaptable schedule.
• ! Demonstrated punctuality, professionalism, and a well-maintained professional appearance.
• ! Ability to follow food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards in a school or commercial kitchen environment.

Preferred

• Prior related experience working with children in a school, childcare, or youth-serving environment.
• Previous experience in food service, cafeteria operations, or a commercial kitchen setting.
• Familiarity with point-of-sale or cashier systems, including cash handling and basic register balancing.
• Knowledge of USDA National School Lunch or Breakfast Program guidelines and nutritional standards.
• Ability to operate various foodservice equipment safely and skillfully.
• Ability to serve as cashier, collect payments, balance cash registers, and prepare deposits when assigned.
• Ability to conduct inventory, verify quantities, and inspect items for compliance with health standards.
